The whole square is a protected urban ensemble (category A monument), and the town's tourist information centre is here.
About the place
Piața Petru Maior is the heart of the old market town. Houses 1–55 make up the 'Historic Centre' ensemble, with 19th–20th-century buildings; the oldest is the Roesler House at no. 55, from 1807. In the 1960s the large square was turned into a park, with a fountain in the Central Park, a copy of the Capitoline Wolf and busts of Petru Maior, Mihai Eminescu, Patriciu Barbu and Constantin Roman-Vivu.
At the end of Strada Sării, on the east side of the square, the Coat of Arms Fountain shows the town's historic arms; the 1934 version depicts a raftsman on the Mureș. The tourist information centre is at no. 60 and can arrange guided walks.
