About the place

The museum began in 1960 with 64 objects gathered by ethnographer Anton Badea and became a county museum in 1970. The main building dates from 1892. The permanent displays cover the 'road of bread', the cycle of life, women in family and society and old trades of the Mureș area; the collections hold ceramics, textiles, peasant furniture, church objects and folk costume.

The courtyard holds the open-air section: houses from Hodac, Gurghiu and Călimănel, the wooden church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist brought from Iara de Mureș, two water mills, wine presses, an oil press and blacksmith and pottery workshops. The museum runs Christmas and Easter craft workshops, and in June 2026 it opened an exhibition of old shirts with ciupag embroidery.
