It is the easiest way to see the salt the resort grew from: rain-washed salt slopes, salty mud pools and lakes closed off to recover.
About the place
The Red and Green Lakes path starts on the shore of Lake Ursu, follows the two lakes and ends at a resting place at the foot of the Salt Mountain. The lakes are fenced off: their mud was extracted between 1981 and 1986, after which they were placed under 'conservation for regeneration', and bathing is forbidden.
The eco-educational salt trail also starts at Lake Ursu, climbs a steep slope to Lacul Șerpilor, a fresh-water marsh, then to the salty Lacul Mierlei and the Salt Mountain. On the southern side you see salty slopes and pools of salt mud, and the way back passes Lake Aluniș.
Good to know
- Do not climb onto the Salt Mountain: access is blocked by an oak-post railing.
- Wear shoes with a good grip; the slope up to Lacul Șerpilor is steep.
- This is a reserve: stay on the paths and do not take salt or plants.
